Occult constrictive pericarditis.
Four cases of occult pericardial constriction are presented. This condition is not uncommon, but needs high index of suspicion. Integration of detailed echocardiographic evaluation in a given patient with diseases known to cause pericardial involvement can clinch the diagnosis.

Significant pericardial disease can exist without overt manifestations. Occult constrictive pericardial disease (OCPD) is identified by normal baseline hemodynamics and normal left ventricular systolic function with a characteristic response to rapid volume infusion. Following the intravenous administration of 1000 ml of normal saline over six to eight minutes, striking elevations of filling pr...

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND A high index of suspicion is required to make the diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis (CP) in patients presenting with cirrhosis and volume overload, as they can otherwise go misdiagnosed for years. METHODS Case report. FINDINGS A 51 year-old man with a history of presumed alcoholic cirrhosis presented to the emergency department with anasarca. Abdominal ultrasou...
متن کاملAsbestos induced pericardial effusion and constrictive pericarditis.
The number of disorders attributable to asbestos exposure has increased gradually over the years. The latest to be recorded is pericardial effusion and constrictive pericarditis, and three cases are reported here. A man with bilateral pleural thickening and plaques developed acute pericarditis and an effusion and was treated by pericardiectomy. Two men died from constrictive pericarditis associ...
متن کاملConstrictive pericardial disease following mitral valve replacement.
Constrictive pericardial disease developing after open heart surgery is not a well-recognized complication of this procedure. It has been reported only a few times and usually not with good hemodynamic data before and after the subsequent pericardiectomy. We presently report a patient who developed constrictive pericardial disease five years after mitral valve replacement. This was documented w...
